While you may have some experience in the industry, and hands-on practice from school, there is no substitute for the insight, tips, experience and feedback a mentor provides. However, finding a dental mentor can be difficult.  So, how does a new grad go about finding a dental mentor? 

Define Your Goals 

Knowing that you want a mentor isn’t enough to narrow your search. You need to determine what your goals are, both in your career and in the mentorship itself. Usually, once you understand what you want the focus of your career to be, it’s easy to figure out what areas you need the most help in. Deciding what you want out of your mentorship also helps in understanding who you may want to reach out to. 

Make a List of People Who May be a Good Fit 

Keep your options open when it comes to finding a mentor. While some new dental grads get tunnel vision when seeking a mentor, and only want the best in their chosen specialty, many established professionals simply won’t have the time or inclination to take on anything new. Attending industry events, and reaching out to colleagues and potential mentors in person is a great way to open the door to getting to know each other. 

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help 

Asking someone to be your mentor can be intimidating. Understanding that most people who have achieved a high level of success have had mentors can make it easier to ask for help. Even if your first choice for a mentor is unavailable, they may be open to answering questions via email, and are usually flattered by the request. Once you have someone accept your request, pay close attention to how they work, and ask questions often to get the most out of your relationship.
