Consider All Your Options 

When you’re looking for your first job after graduation, make sure you consider all of your available opportunities, even if they aren’t your first choice. Sometimes, this opens doors that you wouldn’t have thought of, had you limited your options. 

The Suburbs and Rural Areas Have Great Opportunities

If you expand your searches outside of major cities by an hour, you will find many great practices that are interested in finding future partners. Since there is less competition in areas further away from major metropolitan areas, you can often negotiate a larger salary. 

Do the Math 

Sometimes, new dental grads get caught up in the wrong numbers. If you are comparing multiple compensation packages that include a percentage of collections, don’t just look at the percentage, but also at the average sales numbers. You may make more at a practice with higher sales numbers, despite receiving a lower percentage of collections. 

Don’t Be Afraid to Negotiate 

If you get multiple offers, you may find that none of them are exactly what you’re looking for. It’s okay to make requests and negotiate, so you sign a contract that both parties are happy with. Be prepared to meet in the middle and compromise after making your initial counter offer. You may want to start with asking for slightly more than what you are hoping to end up with.
