Work life balance and dentistry don’t always go hand-in-hand, especially if you own your own practice. However, it can be achieved with the right systems and planning in place. Creating a healthy work life balance leads to better performance at work, and lets you be more engaged in your personal life.

Set Working Hours

One of the most difficult aspects of creating a work life balance for dentists who own their own practice is setting working hours. By scheduling your day, and creating a notable separation of working hours and “off” hours, you help to establish the expectation that you aren’t easily contacted during your off time. This also may make it easier for you to shift out of a mindset that blurs the line between home and work.

Optimize Your Workspace

When you want to create more personal time, optimizing your workspace becomes incredibly important. Creating an efficient environment allows you to get more done during your working hours, so you don’t feel pressured to stay late or continue to work after you get home.

Create a Cohesive Team

Knowing that your team is able to keep your practice up and running while you’re gone is essential when you want to be able to take days off.  Delegating tasks that others are able to finish also keeps you focused on the responsibilities that only you can do. This conserves your most important finite resource - your time. When building your team, make sure you choose colleagues who communicate well, and who you feel comfortable assigning tasks and responsibilities when needed.
